SDM College was a brainchild of the then Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala, Sri D Ratnavarma Heggade. Established in 1966 at a very small scale at Siddavana Gurukula was affiliated to Mysore University. It is affiliated to the Mangalore university since 1989. The college continued to grow with the introduction of Postgraduate programmes from the academic year 2001.The college attained academic autonomy from the academic year 2007. At present, the college along with 5 undergraduate 10 postgraduate programmes also offers PhD programmes affiliated to the universities of Hampi, Tumkur and Mangalore.
It is one of the most reputed colleges in India with high academic quality and ample co-curricular opportunities for a successful professional growth. The architecturally striking buildings, amidst the lush green campus provide an aesthetic environment for academic performances. The UG, PG and Research Programmes are strengthened by active student engagement.
The college has a distinguished record of commitment to equal opportunities. About 60 % of the students get one or the other scholarships. Nearly 2500 Undergraduate and 500 Postgraduate students study at campus. A large proportion of our students live in college accommodation.
Managed by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Educational Society, the Institution attained all round excellence under the dynamic leadership of Revered Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade. The College is accorded with autonomous status by the UGC and is one of the five autonomous colleges under Mangalore University.
The college is established in a vast land area of more than 25 acres in the background of the scenic beauty of the Western Ghats in Belthangady Taluk. With the state of art infrastructure, adequate classrooms and laboratories, the College has all the modern facilities for teaching, learning and research requirements.
6 AV/seminar halls, multimedia centre, 18 mbps lease line for internet connectivity, WIFI facility, Studio, Indoor and outdoor stadiums, multi gym facilities for all sorts of sports and games, provide maximum support to the overall development of the students. With the free and subsidized hostel facilities the College attracts talented students from far and wide. As a result the college received 142 Ranks in the University Examinations.
The large lotus at the bottom of our emblem represents perception indicating that our institution allows growth of knowledge based on individual perception. The two layers representing knowledge and conduct safeguard and develop personality. The institution aims at providing unlimited opportunities through liberal education for the flowering of one's personality.
The burning lamp symbolizes the student; the three layers around the lamp symbolizes perception, knowledge and conduct. Thus the layers stabilize the students' personality making it shine brightly forever based on perception.
