Best Practices

Internship during summer vacations

The department encourages students to opt for internship in media organizations with an aim to provide them hands-on working experience and to get a feel of working with professionals. The effort of the department has yielded highly positive and encouraging results. The practice of internship has not provided a working experience, but has helped many students to get absorbed in the field. However, a six internship at the end of the course is mandatory for all the students.

Motivation for writing articles to newspapers

The department also encourages the students to write articles and features regularly to the print media. The effort gives the students to experience of publishing their write-ups in regular newspapers. By such publications students help them gain recognition in media and possibly support their employment prospects.

Recognition of students publications

The works of the students which has media acceptance and are of good quality are given recognition by the department by displaying it on the notice boards. The practice encourages the students to work more seriously and also prompt other students to work hard to gain recognition.

Five minutes speech by one student in every class

The department has a very unique practice of encouraging every student in the class to deliver a speech on any academic topic of interest. This will help the student to overcome stage fear and also give a chance to express oneself freely.

Class Representative (Leadership) concept in every class

The department has designed a practice of selecting a class representative both at under-graduate and post-graduate level. The representatives act as a link between faculty and students and also help in class management. The practice helps in identifying leadership qualities among students.

Taking students to Court and Police Station as part of practical.

As a part of an exercise of providing practical and field based training the students are encouraged to visit local courts and police stations to get first-hand knowledge of judicial and crime reporting. These two are specialized areas in the field of journalism. Besides, during the visit the students get a chance to interact with officials and other professional journalists.

‘Daring Diaz’ platform for students personality development

Daring Diaz is an open platform for the students to make presentations on any topic of current interest. The practice helps the students to hone research skills and prepare themselves for a formal presentation to a wider audience. The presentations are discussed threadbare and critical remarks are made by the audience. At the end the faculty also presents their views on the topic and provides an objective evaluation of the presentation.

Spot photo-feature on special occasions

Spot-Photo is another special feature of the department where in the students are encouraged to take pictures of event and happening in the college on a day to day basis. The practice provides support to the students who would like to specialize as a photo-journalist and give them an instant practical experience.

Practice journals by students

The department traditionally brings out a department practice journal on a daily basis and a weekly magazine. Apart from this students are encouraged to bring out their own journal. This will help the students to understand the rigors of the journalistic practice and also learn the management skills of publishing a journal.
